Green Sea turtles
"Kauai's Honu (Green Sea Turtle and the Hawksbill) are facing another serious problem, after coming back from the brink of extinction. Today many of our turtles are growing tumors on their faces and in their throats, causing starvation and eventual death. This outbreak coincides with the extremely rapid bacterial infection of Kauai's reefs." - Terry Lilley, Marine Biologist underwater2web.com |

Scene from CLIMATE:
EXT. HILO BEACH - DAY
Jocelyn slowly strolls in the water. Stands in the water staring at the water as if something just passed by her legs. An attractive WOMAN, mid 40’s, wearing an Hawaiian dress, strolls by. The woman smiles at Jocelyn, who returns it.
WOMAN
Sea turtles only bite if you get too close.
JOCELYN
It startled me. It was so close to shore.
WOMAN
It’s probably confused. It could be artificial lighting, plastic, pollution, even the earth’s magnetic field. Do you know that many sea turtles have tumors and disease from the pollution here?
Jocelyn shakes her head.
HAYLEY
Sorry, sometimes I forget to step off my pulpit. I work for a nonprofit, helping to preserve the oceans and wildlife around here. I'm Hayley... Where are you from?
JOCELYN
New Hampshire.
HAYLEY
No kidding? I’m from Boston originally. Made it out here about ten years ago, after my divorce. What brings you here?
JOCELYN
I’m a geologist... and uh... well, I... honestly? I have no idea.
HAYLEY
That’s the best way to arrive in Hawaii!
JOCELYN
My friend back home keeps telling me to hang loose.
(tries to make a shaka gesture)
But I don’t think I’m very good at it.
HAYLEY
Give yourself a break. Learning to hang loose is not easy for us New Englanders. It can take years. It did for me. Especially after my divorce.
Jocelyn nods. Looks down at the water. Splashes it with her hand.
HAYLEY (CONT’D)
It was nice meeting you Jocelyn. Maybe the turtle was simply saying E komo mai. Welcome.
Jocelyn smiles, nods, watches Hayley walk away.
"Coral reefs are among the Earth's most beautiful, ancient and complex ecosystems. Coral reefs play an essential role in sustaining life in the sea and coastal communities. Healthy coral reefs are some of the most biologically diverse and economically valuable ecosystems on earth, providing food, jobs, recreation, pharmaceuticals, coastal protection and other important functions to virtually everyone on the planet."
